Manufacturing Process

Cells are manufactured using recyclable polyethylene which is US FDA and EU Directive compliant for food contact and storage of drinking water. The manufacturing process utilises six individual layers of flexible, high barrier multilayer structure which provides superior elongation and tensile strength properties, reduces flexible cracking and improves puncture resistance.

Bonding of the layers and fittings is achieved using thermal welding and no adhesives are utilised in the manufacturing process which eliminates the possibility of chemical migration and contamination of the stored rainwater.

Compliance in relation to Australian Standards AS 2070 - Plastics Material For Food Contact Use, and AS/NZS 4020 - Testing of Products for in Contact Use with Drinking Water, is achieved by compliance with the appropriate US FDA and EU Regulations.

All of the materials used in the manufacture of the WaterCell™ meet the appropriate requirements of the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) concerning food contact, and specifically include;

  • 21 CFR 176.170 Table 1, and condition of use D in Table 2
  • 21 CFR 177.180 (b) (1) (i and ii) Styrene block polymers, specifically usage for food type category VI
  • 21 CFR 177.1340 Ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymer resins
  • 21 CFR 177.1350 Ethylene-vinyl acetate polymers, (a), (b), and (c) additives refer to 21 CFR 178.2010, 21 CFR 178.3860, and 21 CFR 178.3297
  • 21 CFR 177.1520 Olefin Polymers, (a) (3) (i), and (c) 3.2
  • 21 CFR 177.2470 Polyoxymethylene copolymers, (c), (d) 2.0 (i and ii), and (e)
  • 21 CFR 178.3297 Colorants for polymers

Also, in correlation to European Union (EU) Regulations, all of the materials used in the manufacture of the water storage liner comply with the respective directives listed below;

  • EU Directive 2002/72/EC (replaces 90/128/EEC) & Amendments 2004/19/EEC and 2005/79/EEC Food Contact Plastics
  • EU Directive 94/62/EC & Amendments 2004/12/EEC, 2005/20/EEC Heavy Metals in Packaging
  • EU Directive 1935/2004/EC Framework Regulations on Food Contact Materials
  • EU Directive 2002/16/EC Badge

Specific test methods according to AS/NZS 4020:

  • Taste of water extract supported by 21 CFR 176 and 177, 2002/72/EC taint testing also conducted internally during development of new products.
  • Appearance of water supported by 21 CFR 176 and 177, 2002/72/EC
  • Growth of aquatic micro-organisms supported by 21 CFR 176, 178, 2002/72/EC, 1935/2004EC
  • Cytotoxic activity of water abstract supported by 21 CFR 176, 177, 178, 2002/72/EC, 1935/2004/EC, 2002/16/EC
  • Mutagenic activity of water abstract supported by 21 CFR 176, 177, 178, 2002/72/EC, 1935/2004/EC, 2002/16/EC
  • Extraction of Metals supported by 21 CFR 187, 94/62/EC

The objective of AS2070:1999 is to harmonise with the international standards: US FDA Regulations and EEC Directives.
